When we first heard that AMS/Neve was re-releasing the classic 1073, 1084 and 1081 modules the whole Mercenary crew pretty much let out a simultaneous yawn... after all, we had been in the 'vintage' [as in old and very used] equipment business for years and frankly, we were pretty bored of hearing the "N word" bandied about like it was some kind of Holy Grail, catch all magic bullet. Yeah, it's great stuff... but paleeeze... there have been some pretty amazing design strides since 1971 and it was really time to take advantage of those design strides... so we pretty much ignored their existence. So, I'm sure if you've read this far you're probably asking yourself "if they hate the stuff that much... why have they decided to take on the product line?" ... which is a damn valid question with a completely logical answer. We heard their latest designs and absolutely had to have them for our studio!!! The 8801 channel strip is without question the most versatile channel strip ever built. If you can dream it, this thing can do it. The EQ in the 8803 is purportedly based on the equalizer in the 8108 console [one of my least favorite "N word" desks ever]... but I'll be damned how excellent the thing sounds when you get it out of that console [note, I mean no disrespect to the multitude of 8108, 8128, etc. console owners... I'm sure you love your desks and have made amazing recordings with them no matter what some jag off in Foxboro, MA might think]. The 8803 has an air and a depth like nothing I have experienced, and is the absolute perfect compliment to my three other favorite dual channel EQ's [the GML 8200, the Great River EQ-2NV and the Portico 5033]. Then I tried the 8816 summing buss. In a word. Wow. The quality of the audio was as high a quality as the Neve pedigree would suggest [I mean the real Neve pedigree... ]. The features and functions of this unit are as far as I can tell absolutely unparalleled in any summing machine [including most full on consoles!!]... but beyond it all is "THE SOUND". While the vintage redux modules are sure to please even the fussiest of recordists, the newest offerings from AMS/Neve have far surpassed anything I have heard from that company in probably a smidge over 2 decades. It is very rarely that I am as impressed with equipment as I have become with AMS/Neve's latest offerings... and I dare say you too will very probably be floored when you try them [or we want them back!!! ... seriously, check out our policies page Fletcher |
